Custom instructions are standing preferences Nova applies to every conversation. Set them once and Nova follows them each time, so you don’t have to restate how you like your answers or explain the same context in every chat. They work well for two things: shaping how Nova presents answers, and teaching Nova shorthand for the way you group your events.
  • Formatting preferences: tell Nova how you like summaries structured.
  • Your own labels: map a name you use internally to the events it covers, so Nova knows what you mean without you spelling it out each time.

Setting your instructions

Open the Instructions section on the Nova page and write your instructions in plain language. Nova applies them to every new conversation from then on. You can update or remove them at any time.

Examples

Format an executive summary the way you want it:
When I ask for an executive summary, use 5 bullets maximum, include no more than 3 numbers, and clearly state the commercial impact.
Define a label for a group of events:
When I mention the “Trail Series,” run the analysis across both the Spring Trail Run and the Autumn Trail Run.
Once set, you can simply ask for “an executive summary” or reference the “Trail Series,” and Nova applies the instruction automatically.
