# Custom dashboards

> Ask Nova to build a live, shareable dashboard from your event data, with no report configuration required.

A custom dashboard brings several visualizations together in one view that
updates itself as your data changes. Where a single chat answer gives you one
chart, a dashboard lets you keep the metrics you care about side by side and come
back to them any time. Build one by describing what you want to see, then tweak,
filter, and share it with your team.

Custom dashboards work well when you have a set of numbers you check regularly.
Good examples are a weekly view of sales pace across events, a marketing
performance board, or a sell-out tracker for a capacity-limited race.

## Building a dashboard

Ask Nova to create a dashboard and describe the data you want on it. If you're
not sure what to include, Nova can help you brainstorm.

* "Create a dashboard tracking registrations, revenue, and add-on attach rate for
  my summer series."
* "Create me a dashboard and help me brainstorm the metrics that should go in it."

Nova assembles the dashboard and you can keep refining it in the conversation.
Add or remove charts, change what a widget shows, or adjust the layout. When it
looks right, save it. Your saved dashboards are available from your dashboard
list.

## Live updates

Dashboards refresh their own data. Once a dashboard is built, the numbers stay
current without you rebuilding it, so a board you set up today keeps showing
up-to-date figures the next time you open it.

## Adding filters

You can add drop-down filters to a dashboard so you can change what it shows
without leaving the page, such as a date range or a specific event. Ask Nova to
add them, and use the filters to narrow every widget on the dashboard at once.

* "Add filters to my custom dashboard for date range and event title."

## Sharing with your team

To share a dashboard, click **Share with team** to copy its link, then send it to
your team. Anyone on your team with Nova access can open it.

Your dashboard list shows at a glance which dashboards are visible only to you and
which are shared with your team, so you always know what your colleagues can see.

## Sharing externally

You can also share a dashboard with people outside your team who don't have Nova
access, such as a timing partner or a sponsor. Each external link is protected by
an access PIN, and you can revoke it at any time. An access PIN is an eight-digit
number that the recipient enters to open the dashboard.

External links give a read-only view. Recipients can change the dashboard filters
and export the data, but they can't edit the dashboard or use Nova. Opening a link
always pulls the current data, so the view stays up to date.

<Info>
  To create external links you need edit access to your team's dashboards, or
  you need to be the person who created the dashboard. Share the dashboard with
  your team first. External links are created from the same panel.
</Info>

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the share panel">
    On the dashboard, click **Shared with team** to open the share panel. Below the
    team-sharing options you'll find **Share dashboard externally**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Name the link">
    In **Who is this link for?**, enter a label so you can tell your links apart
    later, for example `timing partner`. Each link gets its own PIN.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Create the link">
    Click **Create link**. Nova generates the link and its **Access PIN** and shows
    them to you once.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Copy and send the details">
    Click **Copy details** to copy the link and PIN together, then send both to your
    recipient. For security, the access PIN is shown only once and can't be viewed
    again. If you lose it, delete the link and create a new one.
  </Step>
</Steps>

### What your recipient sees

When someone opens the link, they're asked to enter the eight-digit access PIN
before anything loads. Your name and logo appear on this screen so they know the
dashboard is from you, but none of the data is visible until they enter the
correct PIN.

After entering the PIN, they see a read-only version of the dashboard: its charts,
KPI widgets, filters, and an **Export** button for CSV or PDF. They can't edit the
dashboard or open Nova. If the PIN is wrong or you've deleted the link, they see
`That link or PIN is invalid, or access has been removed.`

### Revoking a link

Every link you've created is listed under **Existing external links**, each with a
**Delete** button. Deleting a link takes effect immediately. The next time anyone
tries to use it, they're locked out. Links don't expire on their own, so delete
them when a recipient no longer needs access. You can keep up to 20 external links
on a single dashboard.

### Dashboards with financial data

If a dashboard includes financial figures, the share panel warns you before you
create a link:

> Anyone with this link and access PIN will be able to view the financial data it
> contains. Only share it with people who should have access.

Only people with permission to see financial data can create a financial external
link, and PDF exports of that link are held to the same permission. Share these
links carefully, and delete them as soon as the recipient is done.

## Getting a dashboard by email

You can have a dashboard delivered to you on a schedule, so you stay on top of the
numbers without opening it. Set up a recurring email digest of the dashboard and
Nova emails you a summary at the frequency you choose. See
[Email digests](/docs/nova/email-digest-reports) to set one up.
