# Purchase Limits & Basket Restrictions

> Control how many of a ticket each participant can buy, and require tickets to be bought together so they can’t be purchased on their own.

Purchase limits and basket restrictions control the **quantity** and **combination** of tickets a participant can buy in one registration. Purchase limits cap (or require a minimum of) a single ticket type. Basket restrictions link tickets together — useful when a ticket shouldn't be sold on its own, like a child entry that must accompany an adult. Both are set on the ticket, in its **Purchase limits** section, which manages how many of that ticket a participant can buy in one registration.

## When to use each

* **Purchase limits** — use a **maximum** to stop one person buying up a capped or premium ticket, and a **minimum** when a ticket is only sold in groups (for example a relay team that needs at least four entries).
* **Basket restrictions** — use **Link tickets** when a ticket can't be bought on its own and must go alongside another, such as a junior ticket that needs an accompanying adult.

Set limits to match how you actually want the ticket sold, and check them against any group sizes you expect — a minimum that's too high or a maximum that's too low will block legitimate bookings at checkout.

## Setting purchase limits

Purchase limits are the two fields at the top of the ticket's **Purchase limits** section.

    **Minimum tickets per booking** is the fewest of this ticket a participant must buy in one registration. Leave it blank (or set it to 1) for no minimum. When you set a minimum above 1, a participant has to add at least that many before they can check out.

    **Maximum tickets per booking** is the most of this ticket one participant can buy in a single registration. Leave it blank for no cap (it shows as **Unlimited**). Values run from 0 up to 1,000.

## What participants experience with limits

At ticket selection, a participant can't add more of a ticket than its **maximum**. If the ticket has a **minimum**, they must reach it before checkout will let them continue. The limits apply per registration, so the same person could place a second separate order — purchase limits cap a single basket, not a person across multiple orders.

## Linking tickets (basket restrictions)

Basket restrictions live under **Advanced settings** in the same **Purchase limits** section, where you'll find the **Basket restriction** controls. A basket restriction makes one ticket depend on another being in the basket.

    In the ticket's **Purchase limits** section, open **Advanced settings** and choose **Add a cart restriction** to open the **Basket restriction** setup.

  <Step title="Link this ticket to a mandatory ticket">
    Turn on **Link tickets** to mark that this ticket can't be bought on its own. Then choose the **Mandatory additional ticket** that must be in the basket alongside it. For example, if a participant selects a Child ticket, they can't check out until at least one Adult ticket is also in the basket.

  <Step title="Set the ratio (optional)">
    Set a **Minimum** and **Maximum** number of the linked ticket allowed for each ticket of this type — so you can require, say, one adult for every child, or cap how many of the linked ticket can be added.

    You can customize the checkout message participants see when the rule isn't met (the default is "Complete your cart", up to 160 characters). A live preview updates as you type. Save when you're done.

<Warning>
  A link only governs the basket from the perspective of the ticket it's set on.
  If you want the rule enforced both ways, add the matching restriction to the
  other ticket too.

## What participants experience with basket restrictions

When a participant has a restricted ticket in their basket without the ticket it's linked to, they can't check out. They see your cart restriction message — by default, "Complete your cart" — prompting them to add the required ticket. Once the basket satisfies the rule, with the mandatory ticket present in the right quantity, checkout continues as normal.

## Bundles have their own limit

If you sell [bundles](/docs/event-setup/bundles), the number of times a bundle can be added to one checkout is controlled separately by the bundle's **Limit per booking** setting. That limit is configured on the bundle, not in a ticket's Purchase limits section.
